The House Commerce Committee voted unanimously today to carry over SB 360, the "Guns-to-Work" bill opposed by the Business Council of Alabama, effectively killing the legislation for this session.  Special thanks to Committee Chairman Frank McDaniel, D-Albertville, for his staunch leadership in opposition to this proposed legislation, and to Rep. Pebblin Warren, D-Tuskegee, and Rep. A.J. McCampbell, D-Linden, for taking a strong stance against the bill.

McCampbell, a business owner, said he supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms and personally owns several guns, "but as a businessman, I have a responsibility to the people who come to do business with me."  McCampbell added, "I draw the line at caring for the safety of people I'm charged with caring for at my place of business."

Rep. Warren  said the timing of the bill was "very bad," and that it is wrong to tell an employer he could not tell his employees not to bring a firearm on his property. "Truly you are violating the right of that employer," she said.

Members of the House Commerce Committee voting to carry the bill over were:
Rep. McDaniel; Rep. McCampbell; Rep. Warren; Vice Chairman Rep. Alan Harper, D-Aliceville; Rep. Gerald Allen, R-Tuscaloosa; Rep. DeWayne Bridges, R-Valley; Rep. Bill Dukes, D-Decatur; Rep. James Fields, D-Hanceville; Rep. David Grimes, R-Montgomery; Rep. Rod Scott, D-Fairfield; Rep. Leslie Vance, D-Phenix City; Rep. Jack Williams, R-Birmingham; Rep. Greg Wren, R-Birmingham; and Rep. Greg Canfield, R-Vestavia Hills.

Thanks to our BCA members for contacting your representative about this bill which would have denied a property owner - a company, corporate, or personal -  the right to set a policy that would forbid the possession of firearms in a vehicle on their property.
