South Baldwin Regional Medical Center Awarded Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Center
SBRMC becomes only hospital in Baldwin County with this certification

(Foley, AL - December 10, 2018) - South Baldwin Regional Medical Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers.

SBRMC underwent a rigorous onsite review in November 2018. Joint Commission experts evaluated the medical center’s compliance with stroke-related standards and requirements including program management, the delivery of clinical care, and performance improvement.

“We received excellent on-the-spot feedback from the survey team, and we promptly received notification that SBRMC has been recognized by The Joint Commission for thoroughly demonstrating an advanced level of commitment to the care of stroke patients,” said Christy Jernigan, Stroke Coordinator for SBRMC.

“Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States,” said George Graves, M.D., neurologist and SBRMC Stroke Medical Director. “On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and someone dies of a stroke every four minutes. At SBRMC, our hospital is committed to offering aggressive early intervention, progressive treatment, prevention and education, and rehabilitation services.”

“Stroke certification recognizes SBRMC as a leader in stroke care, providing a higher standard of service for stroke patients of Baldwin County,” said Daniel McKinney, chief executive officer for SBRMC. “Earning a stroke center certification at our community hospital reinforces our commitment to providing life-saving care to patients—close to home.”

SBRMC encourages people to know the symptoms of a stroke. Use F.A.S.T. to remember the warning signs:
    • FACE – Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop or is number?
    • ARMS – Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
    • SPEECH – Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Are the words repeated correctly? Or slurred?
    • TIME – If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.
