What is a Chamber of Commerce?

A Chamber of Commerce is a local, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to advocating for businesses, fostering economic development, and strengthening the community through education, networking, and promotion.

What is the purpose of a Chamber of Commerce?

A Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based organization made up of local businesses, professionals, and community leaders who work together to strengthen the economic environment of a region. The core purpose of a Chamber is to advocate for its members, support business growth, foster connections through networking opportunities, and contribute to community development through collaboration and leadership. While each Chamber may tailor its focus to the needs of its area, they all share the common goal of promoting a thriving, resilient local economy.

At the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, our mission is to support and promote the business community throughout South Baldwin County. We provide valuable tools and resources, advocate on behalf of our members, and offer exclusive opportunities for marketing, education, and leadership development. Whether you're a new business, a growing enterprise, or an established community partner, we’re here to help you succeed.

What is the history of Chambers of Commerce—and the South Baldwin Chamber?

Chambers of Commerce date back centuries, with the first known chamber founded in 1599 in Marseille, France. These organizations began as networks of merchants and business owners who joined forces to advocate for shared interests and promote commerce in their regions. The concept spread across Europe and to North America, where the first U.S. Chamber was established in New York City in 1768. Today, Chambers continue to play a critical role in shaping strong business communities across the globe.

Locally, the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1944 to serve as a unifying voice for business and community in our region. Known as the “Gateway to the Gulf,” the Chamber has remained a cornerstone of economic development and collaboration in South Baldwin County. In 2021, the City of Foley donated a historic 1925 Mission Revival-style building to serve as the Chamber’s permanent headquarters. After careful renovations to preserve its character, the Chamber officially moved into its new home in May 2023. This space stands as a testament to our long-standing commitment to preserving our heritage while continuing to invest in the future success of our business community.
