  • South Baldwin Literacy Council: Making a Difference in Our Community

Our South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce Diplomat team had the privilege of meeting with the South Baldwin Literacy Council to learn more about their impactful youth and adult education programs. The council provides free tutoring services in reading and math for students in K-6 grades, making a significant difference in the lives of many children.

"I can’t say enough about how much they have helped my daughter with math over the years," said Diplomat Chairwoman Samantha Lewellen with Farmers Insurance, the Weaver Agency. "They are truly a blessing to our community!"

The South Baldwin Literacy Council's dedication extends beyond tutoring. They offer a range of educational programs for adults, including literacy, math, and ESL (English as a Second Language) classes. Their services are designed to empower individuals and improve their quality of life through education. They even offer GED preparation and testing, helping adults achieve their educational goals and open doors to new opportunities.

The council continually faces financial challenges. There is no federal funding for their services, which means they operate solely on donations and grants. It costs $312 to sponsor a child’s tutoring for a year, or $26 per month. This financial model underscores the importance of community support in sustaining their programs.

We are proud to share that our dedicated group was able to donate almost $500 to support the South Baldwin Literacy Council’s mission. A special shout-out goes to David Hancox with Local IT, LLC, for stepping up and sponsoring a child for an entire year. Our group’s commitment to giving back is truly making a positive impact in our community.

The council is always in search of volunteers and tutors. If you feel inspired to help brighten a child’s education or support adult learners, please reach out to them. Your involvement can make a significant difference.
